Hello!

August 11, 2022

Welcome! I am so excited that you are exploring this corner of the internet.

I’m Dr. Hadiya Sewer. I’m trained as both an academic and a spiritual practitioner. I did my B.A. in Sociology at the illustrious Spelman College and I earned by Ph.D. in Africana Studies at Brown University. As an aborisa in the Ifa tradition, I practice African and Afro Caribbean spiritual systems. My friends will tell you that I’m a quintessential Sagittarius—a deeply curious traveler, decolonial feminist philosopher, bookworm, entrepreneur, and truth seeker. I have two small children who keep me on my toes and I’m always obsessively thinking about love, freedom, and the relationship between the two.

This blog is brand spanking new and I’m affectionately calling it “The Magnanimous Project”. Etymologically speaking, the word magnanimous means “great soul”. Magnanimous people are moral, kind, charitable… profoundly generous. I aspire to be magnanimous in every area of my life. While we often think of magnanimous as being defined by how we relate to another, I would argue that great souls are also incredibly kind to themselves as well. If you feel called to be magnanimous, I hope that we can inspire one another on this journey.

There are pertinent questions that we must ask ourselves. One being, “What does it mean to be magnanimous in this world during this particular juncture in time and space?” There are, of course, challenges that we face in this epoch— slavery and its aftermaths, the climate crisis, the matrix of domination, the Covid-19 pandemic, and so on. Those of us who desire to be generous and loving have to be both intuitive and strategic if we are to be impactful.

In subsequent posts, I intend to talk a lot about the “good life”. Wtf is the “good life”? How does one live a “good life” and how do we re/design our families, spaces, businesses, economies, and political systems so that the “good life” (whatever the f@#$% it is)can be accessible to all who desire it.

There’s a question that lies at the crux of this project— How can we be increasingly loving and tender with ourselves and all of our planetary kin? I hope that you’ll join me in pondering this and other pertinent questions.

Buckle up, my love! We’re going to chat about all types of shit— art, philanthropy, literature, politics, justice, tech, spirituality, environmentalism, and a few big existential questions. In short, this blog is a philosopher’s exploration of what it might mean to live an ethical “soft life”.
